Property owner shoreline modification decisions vary based on their perceptions of shoreline change and interests in ecological benefits

چکیده
Even under current sea level conditions, many communities are working to protect their coastlines against flooding and shoreline erosion. Coastal often shorelines excessive erosion by using armoring techniques (e.g., bulkheads, riprap). Yet hardened structures reduce of the natural adaptive mechanisms present in coastal ecosystems sustainability system. In contrast, nature-based features living shorelines) can better properties from storm damage while also having potential adapt new conditions. Since property owners installing more than shorelines, we sought understand factors motivating modification decision. We surveyed Virginia, U.S. that applied for a permit. Most owners, regardless sought, perceive riprap revetment be effective, able withstand damage, rise. Interestingly, out were not highly confident shorelines’ protection benefits. While most perceived ecological benefits these did substantially impact decision over what type implement. Our work highlights pathways improve resilience given important role owner decisions contribute community resiliency. results indicate there is need engage about adaptation as perceptions aligned with scientific assessments shorelines. Concurrently, policies could strengthened support approaches management, common resilient rise or damage.

Through numerous SWAN wave simulations, a table is devel...

12 13 Coastal changes on sandy shorelines are continuous and occur at diverse spatial and 14 temporal scales. Gaining knowledge on beach change processes increases our capability 15 to manage risks affecting the increasing population living in coastal areas, especially 16 shoreline erosion. Processes and factors involved in mediumand short-term beach 17 changes depend on the morphological and d...

Because of the suitability of coastal lands for different groups of activities such as recreational, residential and commercial functions, there is an increasing demand among different stakeholders to benefit from these natural lands. The conflicts between the users, sometimes, lead to exclusiveness and limitation of public access to the shoreline. This article aims to recognize the main agents...
متن کاملStudy of the Correlation between the Mapped Shoreline - Change and Shoreline
This paper presents the results of studying the correlation between the mapped shoreline-change and shoreline-curvature based on a new concept called shoreline-segment orientation. Shoreline mapping provides a means of monitoring shoreline-change, which is very essential for coastal planning and decision making. When we represent the mapped shorelines in the geographic database, a curved shorel...
متن کاملAutomatic Measurement of Shoreline Change on Djerba Island of Tunisia
This study presents measurement of changes using image processing techniques, Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) and Landsat images along the coast of the island of Djerba, Tunisia. Three regions of this island were selected: Rass Errmall, El Kastil and Aghir. Accretions as well as erosion processes were observed in the study areas between 1984 and 2009. The average of the erosion was aro...
